First things first, we needed to procure marine grade plywood in order to build this sailboat.  The closest location to purchase said plywood was all the way up in White Plains, a 45 minute drive north of the city.  With no vehicles of our own, we were able to use Noah’s cousin’s sedan to go to Condon Lumber Co, a family company in business since 1912.  After securing eight sheets of 12”x24” plywood to the roof of the car with twine, we headed home. It was a very windy day and on the interstate home, half a sheet of plywood took flight. After Noah valiantly rescued the fallen wood from oncoming highway traffic, a state trooper took notice and insisted that we get off the highway. This made the for a very stressful morning for both Rachel and I but eventually wood and the people made it back to the West Village safely.

  3. "There’s a cohesive culture in Wisconsin that revolves around beer, brats, cheese, the Packers, the Badgers, fish fry, supper clubs and 1,000 other things that make this state unique. Milwaukeeans will tell you that they are content to keep their hometown a well-kept secret, but there’s always an empty barstool somewhere in town, so stop by the next time you thirst for something different."

  4. "On November 1, 2002, Wisconsin became the first state in the country to actually complete and enact legislation to license creative arts therapists."

  6. "The other nominees in this category are women that inspire me deeply, and have made me laugh, and comforted me at the darkest moments of my life. Julia, Tina, Amy, and Zooey have respectively gotten me through middle school, mono, a ruptured ear drum, and the acute floating anxiety that populates my entire life. And I worship them."

    - Lena Dunham’s acceptance speech for best actess in a TV comedy.

I’m really glad that Lena got up there and said what we are all thinking.  Not only did she honor some of the female comedians that I have also grown up loving, she also identified why comedy is so important in each of our lives.  Comedy provides us with comfort and friendship at those times when we truly need it.  Love all you ladies.

  8. "Christmas is when we gather up everything good in our life: all the warmth and the light and all the good memories, and draw it close and enjoy it as much as we’re able to. We gather up our children, we make food, build a fire, light the lights, sing the songs, come as close as possible for as long as possible, and in the midst of it people cry who you never thought had a drop of water in them."

  9. "It has been a quiet week in Lake Wobegon. It’s been cold, but then of course it’s Christmas. Anyway, cold is a stimulant of sound thinking, we know that. There’s nothing like cold to bring you back to reality, and the reality is that we’re very lucky. It’s Christmas and our hearts our open. It’s the time when all ages and all times meet as one. We’re the parents and we’re the children. Childhood is the country we had to leave behind, and at Christmas we get to go back and speak in our very first language."
